The Olympic ice hockey tournament at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo ( Japan ) was the first that was not counted as a world championship . The ice hockey games took place from February 3rd to 12th. Eleven teams took part in this tournament and played a total of 30 games. The venues were the Makomanai indoor stadium (12,000 seats) and the Tsukisamu sports hall (6,000 seats).

The six teams of the A group of the ice hockey world championship 1971 as well as the best five teams of the B group were eligible . Added to this was Japan as host. Since the GDR team had decided not to participate, only eleven took part instead of the planned twelve teams.

As in Innsbruck in 1964 and Grenoble in 1968, the tournament started with a round of elimination, with the Soviet Union already set as the reigning world champion for the final round after the GDR renounced. The remaining pairings were compiled using a seeding list based on the placements at the 1971 World Cup. It was also the first Olympic ice hockey tournament without Canadian participation. The sovereign Olympic champion was the Soviet Union, which won its fourth gold medal, ahead of the big surprise team of this tournament, the USA , which won silver as a group B team.

The German ice hockey player Alois Schloder was found to have taken a stimulant containing ephedrine on February 9 , which resulted in his exclusion from the tournament. However, the preparation had been prescribed to him shortly beforehand by the team doctor of the German Ice Hockey Federation because of low blood pressure. The International Ice Hockey Federation lifted the six-month ban a little later and Schloder was back in action at the World Cup in April 1972 .
