Richard Farda (born November 8, 1945 in Brno , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player and coach . He played for many years in the top division of Czechoslovakia for Spartak ZJŠ Brno and in the World Hockey Association (WHA) for the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls .
Career as a player
Richard Farda started his career in his hometown at Spartak ZJŠ Brno. In 1962 he made his debut in the 1st division of the ČSSR . Between 1963 and 1965 he played during his army service for Dukla Jihlava , one of the army clubs in Czechoslovakia. After completing his military service, he returned to Brno and won the Czechoslovak Championship in 1966 . He played until 1974 for his hometown club before 1974 while vacationing with Václav Nedomanský in Switzerland fled. But since the two had to fear an 18-month ban of the IIHF in other European countries , they moved to North America and played for the Toronto Toros in the WHA. In 1976, the Toros moved to Birmingham and were renamed Birmingham Bulls , for which Farda completed another season. He scored 34 goals in 178 WHA games, while he scored 177 goals in 408 league games in the ČSSR.
After three years in the WHA, he moved back to Europe and played for Genève-Servette HC in the 1977/78 season . This was followed by two more seasons at Zürcher SC and a few years in the amateur leagues in Switzerland, where he worked as a player-coach.
International
For many years Farda also played for Czechoslovakia in international championships and won six medals at ice hockey world championships and one medal at Winter Olympics. For the 1969 World Cup , he received his first appointment in the selection of the CSSR and won the bronze medal. In the following years he regularly took part in the world championships. His greatest successes were winning the bronze medal at the 1972 Winter Olympics and the world championship title in the same year. In 149 international matches, he scored a total of 49 goals in the national jersey.
Career as a coach
After working as a player-coach in Switzerland, he took over as a full-time coach at ESV Kaufbeuren in the 1989/90 season . He then moved to HC Olomouc , which he also looked after as head coach.
Between 1993 and 1999 Farda worked as the head coach of HC Slavia Prague and with this club made promotion to the extra league in 1994 .
Until November 2001 he then coached the Swiss third division club EHC Bülach . After a few unsuccessful games in the first division of Switzerland, he then moved to HC Lasselsberger Plzeň , which he was in charge of until the middle of the 2002/03 season . In the following season he took over the coaching position at league competitor HC Energie Karlovy Vary . During the 2006/07 season he worked as head coach for the Italian club WSV Sterzing Broncos .
