After Canada had already ousted the reigning Olympic champion Norway from the throne at the 2000 Sledge Ice Hockey World Championship , this time the USA prevailed against Norway in the final, with the US and the Swedes taking the penalty shootout in the game for third place needed to earn the desired medal.

For the USA this was the greatest success in international sledge ice hockey, while the Norwegians maintained their top position after the gold medal in 1998 and second places in the Paralympics in 1994 and the World Cup in 2000.
