At the XXII. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi hosted two ice hockey competitions. When men's tournament twelve teams competed, the women's tournament was held with eight teams.
The participants in the preliminary round groups were based on the status of the IIHF world rankings in 2012 and the results of the qualifying tournaments. The men's tournament began on February 12, the women's tournament on February 8, 2014, one day after the opening ceremony on February 7. The women's final took place on February 20, the men's on February 23, the final day of the Games. The national team of Canada became Olympic champion - both for women and men .
Venues
The games of the men's and women's tournament were played in the Schaiba ice arena (Russian: Ледовая арена “«айба” ) with a capacity of 7,000 . The multifunctional hall is designed in such a way that it can be dismantled after the games and reassembled at another location. “Schaiba” (Russian: Шайба ) is the Russian name for “puck”. The finals were held in the Bolshoi Ice Palace (Russian: Большой ледовый дворец, "Большой" , literally "Big Ice Palace"), which was completed in 2012 and has a capacity of 12,000 spectators. Both stadiums are located in the Sochi Olympic Park .

Mode and participants
As in Vancouver 2010 , the 2014 Winter Olympics were held in three groups for men and in two groups of four teams for women. The qualification for the Olympic tournament was based on the IIHF world rankings . For men, the first nine ranks ( Sweden , Finland , Russia , Czech Republic , Canada , United States , Switzerland , Slovakia and Norway ) were automatically qualified. The next ranked teams played three qualifying tournaments in which Latvia , Austria and Slovenia qualified. For women, teams from the United States , Canada , Finland , Russia , Switzerland and Sweden were directly qualified. There were also Germany and Japan , who qualified through the qualifying tournaments.
