List of Olympic champions in ice hockey
The list of Olympic champions in ice hockey lists all winners as well as the second and third places in ice hockey competitions at the Olympic Winter Games , broken down by men and women. In the further part, all ice hockey players who have been Olympic champions at least once and have won another Olympic medal are listed.
Competitions
Men
The men's Olympic ice hockey tournament has been part of the program of the games since the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix . In addition, a demonstration competition was held as part of the 1920 Summer Olympics , which was only recognized by the IOC as an official Olympic tournament a few decades later .
From 1920 to 1952 , the North American nations Canada and the USA mostly dominated the tournaments for Olympic gold. Canada's supremacy was reflected in this period in winning a total of six gold and one silver medal. Only the national team of Great Britain was able to beat the Canadians in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 . However, the team mainly consisted of Canadian players. The USA was able to win four silver and one bronze medal by 1952. In the following eight years, a gold and another silver were added. With the Soviet gold medal win in 1956 , an almost 40-year dominance in world ice hockey began, which was reflected in a total of eight Olympic victories by the USSR and the United Team . Only the Americans were able to break into the Soviet phalanx and win gold at their home games in Squaw Valley in 1960 and Lake Placid in 1980 . In 1994 and 2006 the Swedes won the title twice. In addition, the Czechs secured their first Olympic victory in 1998 , and Canada ended a 50-year dry spell without a gold medal for the men's ice hockey team in 2002 .
A total of 22 gold medals have been awarded so far.
Women
The women's Olympic ice hockey tournament has been part of the program of the games since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano .
So far, the six editions have been largely dominated by the North American nations from the United States and Canada . After the Americans were able to beat the Canadians at the Olympic premiere in Nagano, the Canadian women secured the title in each of the following four editions. In 2006, the Swedes were the first European nation to win a silver medal.
A total of six gold medals have been awarded so far.
