Leonid Volkov ( Russian Леонид Иванович Волков * 9. December 1934 in Gorky , Russian SFSR ; † 17th May 1995 in Moscow ) was a Soviet - Russian ice hockey player , who for many years for CSKA Moscow and Torpedo Gorky in the Klass A active and was Soviet champion six times . With the Soviet national team he won the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 .
Career
Beginnings in Gorky
As a child and adolescent, Leonid Volkov played ice hockey in backyards and frozen bodies of water before playing for the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod factory team from 1949 . In 1951 he was accepted into the team of Torpedo Gorki . where he quickly established himself and matured into a leader.
Success with CSKA Moscow
Due to the performances shown at Torpedo, he quickly came into the focus of the ZSK MO Moscow , but the Gorkier authorities initially successfully defended themselves against a delegation from Wolow to the central sports club of the army. But since he had no chance of being accepted into the Soviet national team as a player in a provincial club , the desire to move to the capital grew over the years. It was not until 1957 that Volkov moved to ZSK MO in the capital and won seven Soviet championship titles with the army sports club by 1965 (1958–1961, 1963–1965). He also won the Soviet cup competition with ZSKA in 1961 .
He scored a total of 145 goals in 250 games in Class A , before moving to SKA MWO Kalinin in the second class Class B in 1965 and ending his career there in 1967. At the same time as ice hockey, Volkov had previously studied pedagogy in Moscow and taught at a military academy after he retired.
International
While Leonid Volkov played for Torpedo Gorky, he did not receive an invitation to the national team. It was only when he moved to CSKA Moscow in 1957 that he became the focus of national coaches. However, since they were forced to use a number of the other two capital city clubs - Dynamo and Spartak - in addition to CSKA players , Wolkow had to wait a long time for his international debut.
On December 13, 1963, he was in a friendly against Sweden for the first time for the Soviet national team on the ice, but initially failed to make it into the squad for the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . However, when Dynamo Moscow's Vladimir Yursinov dropped out due to appendicitis, Leonid Volkov replaced his namesake Yuri Volkov , who usually played in a row with Yursinov. At the tournament itself, Leonid Volkov, who with Anatoly Firsow and Viktor Jakuschew formed the third row of Soviets, scored 6 goals and 4 assists and won the Olympic gold medal with Sbornaya .
A year later he competed with the USSR selection at the 1965 World Cup , scoring 4 goals in 6 games and winning the gold medal. The last main round game of the World Cup against Canada on March 14, 1965 was also his last international match. For the national team, he scored a total of 15 goals in 31 international matches.
In 1965 he was named an Honored Master of Sport .
