The 1964/65 season was the 19th season of the Class A as the highest Soviet ice hockey league . CSKA Moscow secured the Soviet championship title for the twelfth time , while Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Traktor Chelyabinsk were relegated to the second division.

The ten teams in Class A played four times against each opponent, making the total number of games per team 36. The team with the best points became champions, while the last two were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
