The 1977/78 season of the Vysschaya League was the 32nd season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . The Soviet championship title was secured for the 21st time by CSKA Moscow .

The ten teams of the Vysschaya League played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 36. The team with the best points became champions, while the bottom of the table had to compete in the relegation against the third of the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
