The 1959/60 season was the 14th season of the Class A as the highest Soviet ice hockey league . CSKA Moscow secured the Soviet championship title for the eighth time .

mode

The 18 teams in Class A were initially divided into three groups with six participants each in the main round. The teams in groups A and B played 25 games each, the teams in group C 30 games each. The top four teams in each group qualified for the playoff quarter-finals, with the top four teams receiving a bye to the round of 16 . The remaining ten teams and the teams eliminated in the playoffs took part in the various placement rounds according to their respective placement. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

Main round

New in the first league included the team of LIISchT Leningrad ( Russian Ленинградский институт инженеров железнодорожного транспорта , now State University of Transportation Saint Petersburg ) and the team of Dinamo Riga , under the name of the Latvian Wagonbaukonzerns rīgas vagonbūves rūpnīca in the league participated.
