His career began in 1952 at his home club HK Spartak Moscow , for which he was previously active in the youth field. After only one season and another at ODO Leningrad , he joined the then master club CSKA Moscow in 1954 and stayed here until the end of his career in 1967. With CSKA Moscow he won the Soviet championship ten times and played in a row with Alexander Almetow and Weniamin Alexandrow . This series scored 213 goals in 340 league games. During this time he was also a member of the Soviet national ice hockey team , with which he won three gold medals (1964, 1965, 1966), three silver medals (1957, 1958, 1959) and two bronze medals (1960, 1961) at eight ice hockey world championships . In his first World Cup in 1957, he scored a total of nine goals.

He also took part in two Olympic Games and won a gold medal once ( 1964 ) and a bronze medal in 1960 . As a result, he (and the entire team) was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in 1964. In his role as assistant to the national coach of the Sbornaja , he took part in the 1975 World Cup and in 1976 at the Winter Games in Innsbruck.

In the years 1975 to 1977 Loktew returned as a coach to the CSKA and won two more championship titles. In 2007 Loktew was honored for his services by being inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .
