Wilhelm Schäfer

Wilhelm Schäfer (born August 16, 1954 in Kettwig ) is a German computer scientist and was President of the University of Paderborn from March 2015 to June 2017 . Before that, he held the chair for software technology at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at the University of Paderborn.

Career

Schäfer graduated from the University of Dortmund with a degree in computer science in 1981 . In 1986 he did his doctorate at the University of Osnabrück in the field of software technology / software tools. He then held an assistant professorship at McGill University in Montreal from 1986 to 1987 . In 1987 Schäfer built up the research and development department of the STZ Gesellschaft für Softwaretechnologie mbH and headed it until 1990. From 1991 to 1994 he was professor for practical computer science (software engineering) at the University of Dortmund and since 1994 he has been a professor in the same department at the university Paderborn. Here he held the position of Vice President for Research and Young Scientists until 2014. On March 1, 2015, Wilhelm Schäfer was appointed President of the University of Paderborn. For health reasons, he resigned from his position on June 27, 2017.

Research priorities

The focus of Schäfer's research work was:

  • Pattern-based, object-oriented specification of software process models, in particular configuration mechanisms;
  • Specification of adaptive reengineering processes and
  • Integrative specification environments.

More functions

Schäfer is also the spokesman for the International Graduate School (Paderborn) and the Paderborn Institute for Advanced Studies in Computer Science and Engineering (PACE). He is the managing director of Zukunftsmeile Fürstenallee Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH in Paderborn.

In 2013 he was admitted to the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) .
