The Heinz Nixdorf Institute (HNI) is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Paderborn . The aim of the research center is to strengthen research in application-oriented areas of computer science and engineering , taking into account issues from the humanities and social sciences.

The Collaborative Research Center SFB 901 On-The-Fly Computing is located at the HNI . In 2017 and 2018, 16 and 11 young researchers completed their doctorates at the HNI. The institute acts as a publisher for scientific publications.

As the university's central scientific institution, the HNI is involved in teaching in many of the university's courses.

The Westphalia Foundation and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation were formed from the assets of Heinz Nixdorf , who died in 1986 . The HNI was established in 1989 through a contract between the Westphalia Foundation, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the University of Paderborn. Foundation representatives also sit on the institute's board of trustees.
