Franz Josef Rammig

Franz Josef Rammig (born June 5, 1947 in Landsberg am Lech ) is a German computer scientist and held the chair for design of parallel systems at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at the University of Paderborn .

Career

Rammig graduated in 1973 from the University of Bonn as a graduate mathematician. In 1977 he received his doctorate in computer science from the University of Dortmund with the highest distinction “summa cum laude”. At the same university he then worked as a research assistant in the IT department. Since 1983 he has been Professor of Practical Computer Science at the University of Paderborn , and since 1993 an endowed professorship at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute . In 1992, he turned down offers to the University of Würzburg and the Technical University of Darmstadt . Rammig spent several months researching at XEROX PARC (1987), UC Irvine (1992, 1997 and 2002) and UFSC Florianópolis (2008).

Research priorities

The main areas of research by Rammig were:

  • Applied Computer Science,
  • Specification, modeling and verification of distributed, embedded real-time systems;
  • Operating systems for distributed real-time systems and
  • Reconfigurable hardware.

Awards and other functions

From 1998 to 1999 Rammig was Vice President of the Society for Computer Science . He also represents Germany at the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), the global umbrella organization for IT companies, and in the IFIP Committee for Computer Systems Technology (TC 10). As part of TC10, Rammig founded the WG10.2 Working Group, Embedded Systems. Rammig has been one of the 8 Councilors of IFIP since September 2013.

Until 2012, Rammig was the university director of the C-LAB , the cooperation between the University of Paderborn and Atos (company) . In addition, from 2008 to 2011 he was Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics. Rammig was also awarded the IFIP Silver Core and the IFIP Outstanding Service Award. Since 2003 he has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . Two years later he became a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) . In 2013 he received the EDA medal from the edacentrum .
