Friedhelm Meyer auf der Heide (born September 20, 1954 in Bielefeld ) is a German computer scientist and holder of the chair for algorithms and complexity at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at the University of Paderborn . Meyer auf der Heide is since 2007 member of the University Council of the University of Paderborn. In 1992 he and Burkhard Monien received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for work in the field of parallel and distributed computing. In 2007 he was admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , in 2013 to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and in 2017 to the German Academy of Science and Engineering .

Career

Meyer auf der Heide received his doctorate in mathematics from Bielefeld University in 1981. From 1984 to 1985 he was a visiting researcher at IBM Research in San José (California) . In 1986 he completed his habilitation in computer science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . He then worked as a professor for theoretical computer science in Dortmund until 1989. Since 1989 he has been a professor at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at the University of Paderborn . There he heads the Algorithms and Complexity specialist group .

Research priorities

Meyer auf der Heide's research focuses on algorithmic and complexity-theoretical questions on:

  • Parallel computing,
  • Communication and data management in networks,
  • Dynamics in networks,
  • Algorithms of computer graphics and
  • Randomization methods.

More functions

Meyer auf der Heide is currently chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Leibniz Center for Computer Science “Schloß Dagstuhl” (since 2014).

At the University of Paderborn , he is on the university council and on the boards of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute , the Paderborn Institute for Data Science and Scientific Computing (DaSCo) and the Paderborn Center for Advanced Studies (PACE). Since 2011 he has been the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 901 " On-the-fly Computing".
