The 1972/73 season of the Vysschaya League was the 27th season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . The Soviet championship title was secured for the 18th time by CSKA Moscow , while Avtomobilist Sverdlovsk was relegated to the second division .

The nine teams of the Vysschaya League played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 32. The team with the highest points became champions, while the bottom of the table was relegated directly to the second division. The penultimate of the Wysschaja Liga had to compete in the relegation against the second in the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
