The 1981/82 season of the Vysschaya League was the 36th season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . CSKA Moscow secured the Soviet championship title for the 25th time , while Kristall Saratov was relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams of the Wysschaja Liga first played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 44. The four best teams then qualified for the final round, in which each team played once against each opponent and the winner became champions. The results from the main round were carried over to the final round. The teams that had occupied the main round in places nine to twelve completed a further 16 games in a relegation round, with the results from the main round also being adopted. The last placed in the relegation round rose directly to the second division. The teams that finished the main round in places five to eight met in a further twelve games per team in a placement round for fifth place. The main round results were also adopted in the placement round. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
