The 1980/81 season of the Vysschaya League was the 35th season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . CSKA Moscow secured the Soviet league title for the 24th time , while Dinamo Minsk and Salawat Yulayev Ufa were relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams of the Wysschaja Liga first played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 44. The six best teams then qualified for the final round, in which each team played once against each opponent and the winner became champions. The results from the main round were carried over to the final round. The teams that had occupied the main round in places seven to twelve, completed a further twelve games in a relegation round, whereby the results from the main round were also adopted. The last two in the relegation round were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
