The 1950/51 season was the fifth season of Class A as the highest Soviet ice hockey league . The WWS MWO Moscow secured the Soviet championship title for the first time . The final round in particular aroused the public's interest and the games that were played in the Dynamo Stadium in Moscow regularly took place in front of a crowd of around 30,000 spectators.

The twelve teams in Class A were initially divided into two groups of six teams each. Each team played one game against the other group opponents in the main round, so the number of games per team was five. The three best teams in each group then played in a home and return round for the championship title, while the other six teams each competed once against each opponent in the placement round for seventh place. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
