The 1960/61 season was the 15th season of the Class A as the highest Soviet ice hockey league . CSKA Moscow secured the Soviet championship title for the ninth time .

mode

The 19 teams in class A were initially divided into two groups with nine and ten participants in the main round. The teams met each of their group opponents in the first and second leg, whereby the teams in group A each played 18 games and the teams in group B played 16 games each. The three best teams in each group qualified for the final round, the winner of which became champions. The teams that finished fourth to sixth in the main round met in the placement round for seventh place, the remaining seven teams in the placement round for 13th place. In the final round as well as in the placement rounds, all teams met each group opponent three times. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
