The club was founded in 1949 as Metallurg Stalinsk. When the city was renamed from Stalinsk to Novokuznetsk in 1961, the name of the ice hockey club also changed. Since it was founded in 1949, the team won the championship title of Class A, 2nd group in 1964 and 1966 and the title of the Wtoraja League in 1971, 1987 and 1990 . With the founding of the Super League , Metallurg Novokuznetsk was accepted into the same in 1993 and played there continuously until the league was dissolved in 2008. The best placement was a fourth place in the 1999/2000 season.

Metallurg belonged to this league from the founding of the KHL in 2008, but regularly had to struggle with financial problems and was finally no longer able to pay not only the players' salaries, but also the costs for flights, hotels and energy. Therefore, the club was excluded from the KHL in May 2017 and Metallurg decided to participate in the second-rate Wysschaja Hockey League .
