Axel Noack (theologian)
Axel Noack (born November 8, 1949 in Biesnitz near Görlitz ) is a Protestant theologian and was Bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Church Province of Saxony in Magdeburg from 1997 to 2008 . From January to June 2009 he was one of two bishops of the merged Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
Live and act
Axel Noack was born as the child of a business economist and a clerk. He attended school in Halle (Saale) , graduated from high school in 1968 and completed an apprenticeship as a fitter.
Because he was refused military service, he was not allowed to study mathematics. From 1968 to 1969 he worked as a diaconal helper in the Hope Valley Institutions in Lobetal near Bernau . From 1969 to 1975 Noack studied theology at the church college (Catechetical Oberseminar) in Naumburg (Saale) and completed his vicariate in Merseburg .
From 1976 to 1978 he worked as a repetitionist for church history at the church college in Naumburg and then took over the service as student and district youth pastor in Merseburg. After seven years in this office, he went to Wolfen in the church district of Bitterfeld as a parish priest .
In 1997 Axel Noack was elected Bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Church Province of Saxony to succeed Christoph Demke , who held this office for 14 years. In June 2009 Noack resigned from his office as bishop and enabled the merged Evangelical Church in Central Germany to get off to a smooth start. His successor was Ilse Junkermann . From then on, Noack held a position in church history at the Theological Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , and has been an honorary professor there since the 2010/2011 winter semester . Until the 2018/19 winter semester, he held regular lectures and seminars. He is particularly concerned with regional church history as well as the processing of church history in the time of the GDR .
Axel Noack is married and has three children.
Other activities
- At the age of 19, Noack was already a youth synodal and later a member of the synod of the church province of Saxony. In 1986 he became a member of the Synod of the then existing Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR and the Conference of Evangelical Church Leaders in the GDR .
- In 1989 and 1990 Noack took part in the citizens' movement. He worked on the "round table" in the Wende in the GDR and in the MfS review committee.
- In 1990 Noack was active in the church unification process and was a member of the Joint Commission of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR (BEK).
- From 1991 to 2003 Noack was a member of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany and has been its representative for the church's missionary service since 2005. From 1996 to 1999 he was chairman of the board of “Services in Overseas”, which in 1999 merged with other church organizations to form the Evangelical Development Service . There he is a member of the supervisory board. Since 2003 he has also been chairman of the Missionary Services Working Group .
- Since 2001 he has been a member of the INKOTA network's advisory board .
- Since 2008 he has been chairman of the board of trustees of the Evangelical Johannes School Foundation, which he initiated and is based in Magdeburg.
- Member of the board of trustees of the evangelical association ProChrist , an organizer of major evangelization events close to the YMCA .
