The 1978/79 season of the Vysschaya League was the 33rd season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . The Soviet championship title was secured for the 22nd time by CSKA Moscow , while Salawat Yulayev Ufa was relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams of the Vysschaya League played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 44. The team with the highest points became champions, while the bottom of the table was relegated directly to the second division. The teams in places ten and eleven had to compete in the relegation against the second and third in the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
