For the 1969/70 season, the defender began his career at HK CSKA Moscow and he stayed with this club until he ended his active career after the 1980/81 season. In total, he scored 58 goals in 459 games in the Soviet league . He was appointed to the Soviet national ice hockey team at an early age . On December 3, 1967, he was in a game against Canada for the first time for the Sbornaja on the ice. His international career was crowned with gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Winter Olympics . For the national team, he scored 34 goals in 281 international matches. At the ice hockey world championships he was world champion eight times with his team (1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979). In 1970 he was inducted into the " Russian Hockey Hall of Fame ". On September 14, 1980 he played his last international match.
