A world championship
The group A tournament, which was held in Helsinki , was overshadowed by the first discovered doping cases in the history of the World Cup. The Swede Ulf Nilsson in the first game Sweden - Poland and the Finn Stig Wetzell in the game Finland - Czechoslovakia tested positive for ephedrine. The players were suspended for the further course of the tournament, the victories of Sweden and Finland on the green table converted into 0: 5 defeats. In addition to the affected teams from Sweden and Finland, the GDR team in particular suffered from these doping decisions; because the direct competitor in the fight against relegation Poland received two unexpected points, which were ultimately decisive for the relegation decision, although the GDR had been successful in direct comparison with Poland.
The sporting events took a very changeable course this year. At first it looked like a title win for the Czechoslovaks , who started with three wins in the tournament , who on the fourth matchday suffered the highest defeat since the 1955 World Cup for the so far undefeated Soviet team with 7-2 . Ultimately, however, the consistency of the defending champion should be the decisive factor, who won all of his other games - including the second leg against the Czechoslovaks - and thus secured the 13th World Cup and 16th European Championship. Although the title holder from 1972 in the second half of the season, in addition to the defeat against the USSR, also lost out to Finland and Sweden, at least second place was never in danger.
