Valery Ivanovich Wassiljew ( Russian Валерий Иванович Васильев ; born August 3, 1949 in Volkhovo, Novgorod Oblast , Russian SFSR ; † April 19, 2012 in Moscow ) was a Soviet ice hockey player ( defender ) and a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame .

Career

Vasilyev's talent was discovered in 1967 by talent scouts from the HK Dynamo Moscow ice hockey club in a youth team. He was brought to Moscow and played for Dynamo in the Soviet league until 1984. In 1970 he was set up for the Soviet national team and played here until 1982, at times also as team captain . He impressed with his toughness, his running skills and his precise passing game.

With the Soviet national team he won two gold medals ( 1972 , 1976 ) and one silver medal ( 1980 ) at the Winter Olympics . In the latter tournament, the so-called Miracle on Ice took place against the USA, which the USSR lost 4: 3. At the ice hockey world championships he was able to win the title a total of eight times with the team ( 1970 , 1973 , 1974 , 1975 , 1978 , 1979 , 1981 , 1982 ).

As a club player he was far less successful; he could never win the Soviet league title with Dynamo , as HK CSKA Moscow dominated the league at that time. In 1998 he was honored with induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame .

As his former club Dynamo Moscow announced, Vasilyev died on April 19, 2012 at the age of 62 after a serious illness.
