The 1st European U19 Ice Hockey Championship took place from December 26, 1967 to January 3, 1968 in Tampere , Finland .

Six teams took part, previously determined by qualifying matches in November and December 1967. The last placed in the tournament should be relegated to the newly introduced B group in the following year. However, the GDR decided not to participate there.

Regular back and forth games only existed between Switzerland and the GDR (in Schaffhausen and Crimmitschau ). Both games between Norway and Sweden were played in the Norwegian cities of Sarpsborg and Oslo . The games between France and Poland and the USSR and Bulgaria took place in Reims, France.

Finland qualified as hosts directly. Czechoslovakia qualified by waiving the West German team.
