The 11th European U18 Ice Hockey Championship took place from December 27, 1977 to January 2, 1978 in Helsinki and Vantaa in Finland . Group B games were played from March 23 to 27, 1978 in 's-Hertogenbosch ( Netherlands ) and Deurne ( Belgium ). For the first time there was also a C group, whose games were held from February 25 to March 3, 1978 in Sofia , Bulgaria .

The decisive game between Finland and the Soviet Union ended 3: 3 after regular playing time. The first extension of 20 minutes ended with two more goals each for both teams. The second extra time was played out as Sudden Victory Overtime and ended after just under two minutes with the winning goal by Jari Kurri .
