The 37th ice hockey world championship and 48th men's ice hockey championship took place between March 14th and 30th, 1970 in the Swedish capital Stockholm . The venue was the Johanneshovs Isstadion with around 10,200 seats. A total of 154,485 spectators attended the 30 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 5,150 per game.

The title was secured for the tenth time and for the eighth time in a row, the Soviet Union , which ended the tournament with only one defeat. Second place went to the Swedish national ice hockey team with seven wins ahead of the third-placed Czechoslovaks . Since only European teams took part in the tournament this year, the world table also corresponded to the European championship table. The Sbornaja won their 13th European Championship title.

In the question of relegation, Poland and the GDR emerged as relegation candidates in the first round . However, with victories over Finland and Poland in the second round, the GDR secured its place in the A group, but in 1971 decided to voluntarily withdraw to the B group.

prehistory

The A group of the World Cup was originally supposed to be held in Montreal and Winnipeg ( Canada ). This would have been the first world championship tournament in the "motherland of ice hockey" .

After the poor results of the Canadian and US national teams in the World Cup in 1969, the then tried Canadian Hockey Association ( Canadian Hockey Association ), the participation of professional players with IIHF tournaments allow. At the IIHF Congress in Stockholm in 1969, the delegates finally agreed on the participation of up to nine professional players who, however, were not allowed to come from the National Hockey League . Due to statements by IOC President Avery Brundage that ice hockey should no longer be recognized as an Olympic sport should professional players be allowed, the IIHF Congress withdrew the previous agreement in January 1970 and returned to the pure amateur regulations. As a result, the Canadian Minister for Health and Amateur Sports, John Munro , announced on January 4, 1970 in protest the withdrawal of the Canadian Ice Hockey Federation from all IIHF tournaments and the non-hosting of the World Cup. The Swedish capital Stockholm, already host of last year's tournament, stepped in for the originally planned venues.
