Hockey Canada (formerly the Canadian Hockey Association ) is the governing body of Canadian ice hockey and a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF .

The modern organization, which has its headquarters in Calgary and a branch in Ottawa , was founded in July 1994 with the merger of the Canadian Hockey Association and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association . Colloquially, the association is still called the Canadian Hockey Association in many places , also because it is officially registered under this name.

In addition to the organization of various professional and non-professional ice hockey leagues in the country, the management of the Canadian national ice hockey teams is one of the association's tasks.

history

By resolution of the Canadian government, the Canadian Hockey Association was founded in 1968 to oversee all activities related to ice hockey in Canada. This included the professional as well as the amateur area as well as university sports . In addition, the association took over the organization of the Canadian national ice hockey teams at international tournaments, such as the World Cup or the Winter Olympics . The organization of the domestic leagues was subject to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association founded in 1914 , which primarily sanctioned the Allan Cup .

In July 1994, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association was finally incorporated into the Canadian Hockey Association , which has since been known as Hockey Canada .

composition

Hockey Canada in turn is made up of many individual, regional associations:

  • British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association
  • Hockey Alberta
  • Hockey Manitoba
  • Hockey New Brunswick
  • Hockey Northwestern Ontario
  • Hockey Nova Scotia
  • Hockey Quebec
  • Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Hockey North ( Territories )
  • Ontario Hockey Federation
  • Ottawa District Hockey Association
  • Hockey PEI ( Prince Edward Island )
  • Saskatchewan Hockey Association

Worn leagues

Over the years Hockey Canada developed a new model for minor leagues and junior leagues known as the Canadian Development Model . As a result of the introduction of this controversial program, two leagues left the association and have been organizing themselves since then under the name National Junior Hockey Alliance . In order to prevent such a procedure, the national association then strengthened its guidelines so much that no player or official today the NJHL is allowed to compete in a Hockey Canada-sanctioned competition. Players who leave the association are also punished with a one-year ban.
