Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto is the Finnish ice hockey association and the umbrella organization for Finnish ice hockey , which is the most popular sport in the country with around 200,000 active people. More than 67,000 players from 428 clubs and 2976 teams have a license in the association itself. At the international level, the Finnish national ice hockey team for men and women represents the association of which Kalervo Kummola is the current president .

Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto was created on January 20, 1929 from a merger of 17 Finnish associations. One year earlier, Finland was accepted into the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) on February 10, 1928 .

The association has hosted numerous men's ice hockey world championships : 1965 in Tampere , 1974 in Helsinki , 1982 , 1991 , 1997 and 2003 . The men's ice hockey world championships in 2012 and 2013 were co-organized with the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation. For women, Finland hosted the A World Cup in 1992 , 1999 and 2009 .
