The SM-liiga season 1984/85 was the tenth season of the Finnish SM-liiga . Finnish champions were for the 16th time and for the first time ever since the introduction of the SM-liiga Ilves Tampere , while Kiekko-Reipas was relegated to the second division.
Regular season
mode
The ten teams of the SM-liiga initially played against each other in 36 seasonal games. While the first four teams qualified for the play-offs , the penultimate had to play against the teams in places two to four of the second division to keep up. The last one was automatically relegated to the second division and was replaced by the second division champions. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
