Tapio Levo (born September 24, 1955 in Pori ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Colorado Rockies and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League from 1972 to 1993 .

Career

Tapio Levo began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the junior division of Ässät Pori , for whose professional team he was active from 1972 to 1981, initially in the SM-sarja and from 1975 in its successor league SM-liiga . With Pori, the defender won the Finnish championship for the first and only time in his career in the 1977/78 season . In the two following seasons he failed with his team in the playoff finals. During his time at Ässät Pori, the national player in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft was selected in the eighth round as the 139th player of the Pittsburgh Penguins , for which he never played.

On July 8, 1981 Levo signed as a free agent a contract with the Colorado Rockies , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1981/82 season . He scored nine goals in 34 games and made 13 assists in his rookie year . When the team was relocated to New Jersey following this season , the Finn stayed in the franchise and was the only European regular with the newly founded New Jersey Devils in the 1982/83 season . From 1983 to 1992, the 1980 Olympian was again under contract with Ässät Pori, with whom he was defeated in the 1983/84 playoff final Tappara Tampere . In the 1989/90 season he succeeded with his team the direct rise from the second class I divisioona after relegation in the previous year. The former NHL player ended his career at the age of 37 following the 1992/93 season, in which he had been under contract with JHT Kalajoki from I divisioona and HPK Hämeenlinna . With HPK he was also subject to TPS Turku in the playoff final.

International

For Finland Levo took part in the World Championships in 1976 , 1978 , 1981 , 1982 , 1983 . Furthermore, he was in Finland's squad at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid .
