Pori [ pɔri ] ( Swedish : Björneborg [ bjœrnəˌbɔrj ]) is an old port and industrial city on the river Kokemäenjoki in Southwest Finland with a population of 84,403 inhabitants (December 31, 2018).
geography
The city is now 20 kilometers from the open sea ( Gulf of Bothnia ), as the land mass of Northern Europe has been constantly rising from the Baltic Sea in the course of land uplift since the melting of the Ice Age glaciation . Measurements have shown that the area still rises one meter in 100 years. Mostly after city fires, Pori was moved several times downstream.
Pori has an area of 2062 km², of which 62 km² are inland waterways.

Pori was founded in 1558. In 1895 the railway to Tampere was built. On January 1st, 2015 Lavia was incorporated into Pori.

Attractions
As in many other Finnish cities, the architecture is the creation of Carl Ludwig Engel . He also designed the town hall from 1839 to 1841. The Juselius mausoleum , which contains frescoes by the Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela , is well worth seeing . Its design is based on the spire of the Frankfurt Cathedral . It was built in 1903 on behalf of the wealthy entrepreneur FA Juselius for his daughter who died at the age of eleven.
In the river mouth in front of the city lies the island of Kirjurinluoto , where an international jazz festival takes place every July .
economy
Machine , wood and other industries are located in Pori . Among other things, the agricultural machinery manufacturer Sampo Rosenlew has its headquarters in Pori.
Pori is the location of a radio transmitter for short and medium wave of the Finnish radio with a 185 meter high transmission mast for medium wave. The broadcasting facilities in Pori mainly broadcast the Finnish broadcasting programs abroad until the latter abandoned its programs from this broadcasting station at the end of 2007. Radio China International's program was then broadcast via the medium-wave transmitter from 2009 to and including April 15, 2013 .
The Pori Airport is located 2 km south of the city.
Culture
Pori has a theater and a modern concert hall, where u. a. the Pori Sinfonietta chamber orchestra performs regularly . Pori receives international attention at the Pori Jazz Festival , which has been held annually in July since 1966 , during which a large number of rooms and parks are converted into jazz locations.
Sports
The club FC Jazz Pori , named after the city's jazz festival , became Finnish football champions in 1993 and 1996. After the 2004 season, the insolvent club broke up. The football department of the Musan Salama club, founded in 1960, played in the second-rate Ykkönen for a short time in the 1990s .
The ice hockey clubs Porin Karhut and Rosenlewin Urheilijat-38 won the Finnish championship in 1965 and 1967 respectively . The two clubs merged in 1967 and have since formed the Porin Ässät club , which won the Finnish championship in 1971, 1978 and 2013. Ässät plays its home games in the Porin jäähalli .
