Antti Aarne
Antti Amatus Aarne [ ˈɑntːi ɑːrnɛ ] (born December 5, 1867 in Pori , † February 5, 1925 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish fairy tale researcher .
Life
Aarne studied in Russia between 1893 and 1898 and was subsequently a language teacher and rector at Russian high schools. He received his doctorate in 1908 with the work Comparative Fairy Tale Research . From 1911 he taught as a lecturer in Finnish and comparative folk poetry research at the University of Helsinki , from 1922 as an associate professor .
Together with Julius and Kaarle Krohn, Aarne is considered to be the founder of the geographical-historical method , also known as the Finnish School . In 1910 he published a typology of fairy tales under the title Directory of Fairy Tale Types with the help of experts , which was substantially revised and supplemented first in 1928 and then again in 1961 by the American Stith Thompson as the Aarne Thompson Index .
