Jesse Joensuu (born October 5, 1987 in Pori ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Jokerit in the Continental Hockey League since April 2015 .

Career

Jesse Joensuu began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Ässät Pori , for whose professional team he was active from 2003 to 2008 in the SM-liiga , the highest Finnish league. His greatest success with Ässät was reaching the championship finals in the 2005/06 season , in which HPK Hämeenlinna lost 1: 3 wins. From 2005 to 2007, the defender came in parallel to the game with Ässät Pori to four missions for the Finnish U20 national team , which took part as a visiting team in the game of the second-rate Mestis .

Towards the end of the 2007/08 season , Joensuu Ässät Pori left and joined the New York Islanders , who had selected him in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as the 60th player. By the end of the season, however, he was only in one game for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League on the ice. In the following two years, the former Finnish junior international came to his first appearances for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League , but played almost exclusively for Bridgeport in the AHL. In the 2010/11 season he played for the NHL and AHL teams at the same time. At the beginning of July 2011 the Finn received a contract for two seasons with HV71 from the Elitserien .

After spending the full 2011/12 season in the Elitserien, Joensuu returned to the National Hockey League for the following season. He signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders in June 2012, for whose organization the Finnish international had previously only been active in North America.

In July 2013, Joensuu signed a two-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers . In December 2014, the Oilers loaned him to SC Bern until the end of the season , where he did not return to Edmonton after the loan business ended, but instead moved permanently to the Jokerit in the Continental Hockey League .

International

For Finland , Joensuu took part in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2004 and 2005 , and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2005 , 2006 and 2007 . At the U20 Junior World Cup in 2006, he and his team won the bronze medal.
