The Swedish steam locomotive type G (II) was a locomotive for heavy freight traffic and later for heavy shunting .

The G had its origin in the Prussian G 8.1 . This was a further development of the G 8 carried out by Robert Garbe and was referred to as the “reinforced normal design”. The G 8.1 was the most frequently built regional railway locomotive, and 4,958 were produced for the Prussian State Railways and for the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

In addition to 20 original G 8.1 locomotives, other locomotives in various substructures were used on Swedish rails .

Type G / Ga

The Swedish state railway Statens Järnvägar ordered 20 G 8.1 locomotives in Germany in 1916 . However, they were only delivered in 1918 as G.1408 – G.1427 by Linke-Hofmann with the serial numbers 1609–1628.

From 1919 these 20 locomotives were referred to as the Ga series. From this series 18 locomotives were rebuilt in the course of the following years, they received new boilers of type B (such as type Gb ) from Swedish production or a barrel axle. The two not rebuilt Ga.1413 and 1414 were called G again from 1942 .

Type Gb

In 1920 and 1923, the SJ had a total of 15 locomotives of the G series built by the local industry, which were classified as Gb  1449-1453 and 1464-1473. The construction was carried out with a reinforced type B boiler with a boiler pressure of 12 bar. Thanks to the lighter tender, the total weight of the locomotive could be reduced to 111.5 tons.

Type Ga2 / G2

In 16 type Ga locomotives, the original boilers were exchanged for Swedish boilers with the designation B between 1929 and 1932 for reasons of standardization . This gave this locomotive the new type designation Ga2 , which was later changed again to G2 . The locomotives Ga.1410, 1413, 1414 and 1418 were not converted.

With the new Swedish boiler, the overall appearance of the locomotive changed to the extent that the individual sandboxes and steam domes disappeared under a single cover.

The two locomotives Ga.1413 and 1414 were called G again from 1942 and were given B exchange boilers in 1943 and 1948, and thus the new designation G2 .

Type Ga3 / G3 / Ga4 / G4

Between 1934 and 1941, a total of 691 G 8.1s in Germany were equipped with a front running axle in order to increase the maximum speed and reduce the average axle load .

Attempts were also made in Sweden in this regard: the Ga.1410 got a front running axle in 1940 and the new company number Ga3.1410. It later became the G3.1410. The Ga.1418 followed in 1941; in addition to the front barrel axle, it also received a new boiler and became the Ga4.1418 or G4.1418.

Type G5

Several locomotives of type Ga have been provided with closed cabs by the SJ over the years. These were classified under the type G5 .

Type G6

The SJ then ran Gb locomotives under the type G6 , which, like the Ga3.1410, had been equipped with a leading axle ( Adam's axle ).

Type G at the TGOJ

The last series of the series was delivered to the TGOJ, which procured the last new steam locomotives for its route network with the two machines No. 95 and No. 96. They corresponded to the principle of the SJ type Gb , but had a closed driver's cab like the type G5 .

The locomotives were used together with the Type  M in ore train traffic between Grängesberg -Malmbangard and Eskilstuna as well as Eskilstuna and Oxelösund . They were based in the Eskilstuna and Kopparberg depots. For the museum locomotive TGOJ.95 there is still a B boiler from the earlier SJ B.1430 available for exchange.

The Ga2 with B boiler taken over by the SJ were classified as type G3 at the TGOJ . After being returned to the SJ ( see Table 1 ), they were again listed in the G2 series .
