AB Motala Verkstad is one of the oldest Swedish manufacturing companies. It was founded in Motala in 1822 by Baltzar von Platen as a machine factory and foundry to produce tools, cranes as well as lock and bridge parts for the construction of the Göta Canal .

history

After the opening of the canal in 1832, von Platen sold the machine factory, which from then on operated as Motala Werkstads Bolag .

This company was headed by Otto Edvard Carlsund from 1843 to 1870 and became internationally known during this time. The company has received several awards and has been recognized at world exhibitions . The writer Jules Verne suggested in his novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that it might be possible that the first fictional submarine Nautilus would have been made in Motala.

The company went bankrupt in 1891 and was rebuilt as Motala Verkstads Nya AB without the subsidiaries (e.g. Motala Varv in Norrköping, which opened in 1841 or Motala Mekaniska Verkstad in Oskarshamn, which was bought in 1884) . Motala Verkstads Nya AB was merged after 1920 with Lindholmens Verkstad to AB Lindholmen – Motala .

AB Lindholmen – Motala was taken over by the Axel Johnson Group in 1944 and remained there until 1986. The name was changed to AB Motala Verkstad . During this time, large parts of the company moved to a new industrial park in Motala,

In February 2011, Aqilles Invest AB became the main owner of AB Motala Verkstad . The acquisition was part of a long-term strategy to develop new growth.

In 2013 Fosie Mekaniska Industrier was taken over by Aqilles Invest and the following year the Motala Verkstad Group (MVG) was created. In 2015 Motala Train went to Alstom Transport and in March 2016 Scana Machining was acquired by MVG. In the same year Kristinehamn AB was taken over and Gustavsviksverkstadem was taken over by Rolls-Royce in October .

In 2018, LMK Forward AB became the majority owner of MVG, which in turn bought all of the shares in David Sjölanders Mekaniska AB .

Range of production

The production spectrum included ships , steam engines and locomotives . The company also bought or rented shipyards in Lindholmen , Nyköping , Norrköping , Oskarshamn and the ironworks in Bångbro .

Motala's first locomotive was built in 1862. Between 1865 and 1876, only one locomotive was built in 1871, the UTSJÖ , which had an iron fire box and wood-burning stove . The first composite locomotive was No. 168 built in 1897, the first locomotive with superheater was built in 1907 with No. 372. It had a Schmidt superheater . The construction numbers 740 and 741 were built according to drawings by Nydqvist och Holm . The last steam locomotive was manufactured in 1950 with the number 972. Locomotive construction ended in 1971 with several copies of the Rc3 and Dm series .
