Oskarshamn is a town in the Swedish province of Kalmar län and the historic province of Småland . The city on the Baltic coast is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

history

In 1646 Queen Christina I gave the fishing settlement Döderhultsvik the status of a market town . When the place was granted city rights in 1856, the name was changed to Oskarshamn. At that time, King Oskar I ruled Sweden and the city, which then had about 2,200 inhabitants, was named after him. In earlier times there were many shipyards in Oskarshamn; but the majority of them are now shut down. There were many stone quarries in the vicinity and so many residents were active in this area.

Economy and Transport

The port of Oskarshamn is of both national and international importance. The ferry connection to Gotland , metal processing companies such as Scania are important economic factors. In summer there is another ferry connection to the island of Blå Jungfrun , which is visible from the city.

Oskarshamn station has been served by passenger trains to Berga and Nässjö again since December 2011.

Nuclear technology

The Oskarshamn nuclear power plant is located near the village. In addition to the power station, the Clab nuclear interim storage facility has existed since 1985 ( Centralt mellanlager för använt kärnbränsle - central storage facility for used nuclear fuels). It is the central repository for the nuclear waste from all Swedish nuclear power plants. The waste is to be stored there for 30 to 40 years. The construction of the central Swedish repository is in preparation.

Culture

The Döderhultarmuseum shows over 200 wooden sculptures by the sculptor Axel Petersson , who is only known to many by the nickname Döderhultarn . The Oskarshamn Maritime Museum is in the same building. Axel Petersson's studio is located near the city center and is open for guided tours in summer.

Cityscape

Most of the houses were built in the 19th century in connection with the construction of the railway line from Nässjö to Oskarshamn. With the expansion of the port, the place grew too. The city was built on a cliff high above the port. The area right by the harbor, the so-called Fnyket , is built from small wooden houses. This area is now a cultural monument and the narrow streets in Fnyket often end with stairs.

The commercial center is rich in buildings from the 1960s and thus resembles equivalent areas in other Swedish cities. Regardless of this, a large number of well-preserved older buildings still exist.

Sports

The ice hockey team IK Oskarshamn come from Oskarshamn . The team plays in the second highest Swedish professional league; HockeyAllsvenskan .
