Mathias Johansson (born February 22, 1974 in Oskarshamn ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played for the Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League from 1990 to 2010 .

Career

Mathias Johansson began his career as a hockey player at Färjestad BK , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 1990/91 season , where he remained free of points in three games. Until 2002, the attacker ran for a total of eleven consecutive years for the Swedish first division club, with whom he won the Swedish championship twice in a row in 1997 and 1998 . He also failed in the 2000/01 season with his team in the finals at Djurgårdens IF . In the summer of 2002, the left-shooter was committed by the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League , who had already selected him in the third round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft as the 54th player, but had not subsequently signed him. He left this in the course of his rookie year in the NHL after the Canadians had given him to their league rivals Pittsburgh Penguins on March 11, 2003 together with Micki DuPont in exchange for Shean Donovan .

After Johansson scored a goal in twelve games for Pittsburgh by the end of the 2002/03 season and provided five assists, he returned as a free agent to his ex-club Färjestad BK, with whom he was in after two runners-up in 2004 and 2005 the 2005/06 season was Swedish champion for the fourth time. For the 2008/09 season , the center moved to the Malmö Redhawks in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , before he joined their league rivals Leksands IF during the season , where he played until the end of the season. He started the 2009/10 season at Skåre BK in Division 1 , the third Swedish division, and ended it at SV Ritten in the Italian A1 series . Then he ended his career. He has been a talent scout at his home club Färjestad BK since the 2011/12 season.

International

For Sweden , Johansson took part in the junior division of the U18 European Junior Championships in 1991 and 1992 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 1994 . In the senior sector, he was part of his country's squad at the 2001 , 2002 , 2003 and 2006 World Championships . He was also in Sweden's squad at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
