The 2009-10 season of the Italian Ice Hockey Championship of Series A1 was the 76th regular hosting of the Italian Championship and was played with a total of nine teams. The defending champion was HC Bozen , Asiago Hockey won the championship for the second time since 2001.
After only eight teams were left in the previous season with the exit of HC Milano Vipers , a ninth club was added again in the 2009/10 season. The year before, HC Valpellice had become runner-up in Serie A2 , Italy's second-highest division, and have now increased the field of participants, which is structured as follows:
The nine clubs initially contest a double round trip, which is followed by another simple first round, which results in a total of forty games per team. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs, which consist of quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. All series are played in Best of Seven mode. The regular round ends on March 2nd, 2010, the playoffs begin on March 6th and last until April 22nd at the latest, but at least until April 15th.
For the first time there was a point regulation for transfer card players. On the player sheet, eight points per team could be awarded for foreigners and dual citizens. A foreigner (EU or non-EU) was calculated with one point, a player with dual citizenship (Italo) with half a counter. This meant that, for example, eight foreigners, seven foreigners and two italos or even five foreigners and six italos could be used. A maximum of 11 transfer card players could be used in one game.
