The 1971/72 season was the 38th season of Serie A1 , the highest Italian ice hockey division . SG Cortina became champion for the 13th time in the club's history .

Initially, the eight teams played a common main round. The four best-placed teams qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The remaining four teams then contested a placement round. The points from the main round were carried over to the final or placement round. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
