After the previous season, the HC Milano Vipers unexpectedly dropped out of the A1 series, which caused great consternation in circles of the league, as the Milanese came from a city with an extensive hockey tradition as a great crowd puller. President Alvise di Canossa announced this step on June 12, 2009, explaining that Italian ice hockey had not developed as desired and he saw no future for the club. Financial reasons were not officially given.
This ultimately left the following eight teams:
- HC Bozen (defending champion)
- Ritten sport
- SG Cortina
- HC Pustertal
- AS Asiago Hockey
- HC Alleghe
- HC Fassa
- SG Pontebba
mode
In the basic round, a three-way round was played. The best four teams qualified for the playoffs, which were held in the form of semi-finals and finals as the best of seven series. The teams in places five to eight played a playdown series. The inferior teams had to go to the next round. The loser of the last series competed against the winner of the A2 series for relegation.

Playoffs
The semi-final series was very one-sided in favor of the two best-placed teams. Ritten Sport was the only team to suffer a defeat and was defeated by HC Pustertal in the second game of the series with 2: 3. HC Bozen won all four games, but had to go into extra time in the last two games. This ended both series prematurely, and the two finalists had a week off before the final series.
Bolzano finally prevailed against the challenger with 4-0 wins in the final and gave the Knights no chance thanks to an excellent Pasi Häkkinen in goal. Legionnaire Kenny Corupe , who had been prematurely released the year before from HDD Olimpija Ljubljana and has since stormed for Bolzano, was able to play his class several times. The HC Bozen won the eighteenth championship title in the club's history and had not lost a game in the entire playoffs.

Playdowns
In the playdowns, the fifth-placed AS Asiago Hockey secured early relegation with a 3-0 in the series and sent SG Pontebba into the next round. HC Alleghe had a lot more trouble with their opponent HC Fassa. After two wins in a row, HC Fassa was able to equalize again, so that the fifth game had to decide. There, however, HC Alleghe finally prevailed.
The two losing teams carried out another Best of Five series. SG Pontebba, who had finished the main round as the last and had just not won against Asiago, defeated HC Fassa with 3-1 wins and thus also secured themselves relegation. In the final of the playdowns the defeated HC Fassa faced the winner of the A2 series, the WSV Sterzing Broncos . The team from the A1 series was able to assert itself with clear victories and thus secure participation in the A1 series for the next season.

Developments after the season
In the summer of 2009, HC Bolzano could enter the Austrian ice hockey league for a short time , as HC Innsbruck had been relegated there voluntarily and so only nine teams were left. HC Bozen had indicated cautious interest, but the club management wanted to secure a sufficiently large budget in any case. The discussions quickly fizzled out, however, as the Italian ice hockey association had announced that it would not approve of HC Bozen's exit for the time being with the development of the Italian league in mind. The future development should be foreseeable at the earliest after the 2009/10 season.
