The 1996/97 season was the 63rd season of Serie A1 , the highest Italian ice hockey division . Champion was for the 14th time in the history of HC Bozen .

Initially, 14 teams contested the first phase of the season together. In the second phase of the season, these teams were divided into two groups of seven participants each. The distribution between the two groups in the second phase of the season was based on their placement in the first phase of the season and the teams received bonus points according to this. The first two of each group in the second phase of the season qualified for the final round, for which HC Bozen and HC Milano 24 were directly qualified as participants in the Alpine League . The four best-placed teams in the final round qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played out. Each team received three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
