The 1997/98 season was the 64th season of Serie A1 , the highest Italian ice hockey division . Champion was for the 15th time in the history of the HC Bozen . The HC Val Venosta , AS Varese Hockey and SV Ritten descended to the second division.

mode

In the main round, each of the 14 teams played a total of 26 games. The six best-placed teams in the main round qualified for the final round, while the remaining eight teams had to compete in the relegation round. All six teams in the final round qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played out. The four best-placed teams in the relegation round qualified for the playoff qualification, the two winners of which were also allowed to participate in the playoffs. The two losers in the playoff qualification and the last four in the relegation round had to compete in the relegation to avoid relegation. The last three placed in the relegation were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
