Stefan Mair (born June 6, 1967 in Bolzano ) is a former Italian ice hockey player and current coach . He has been the head coach of Hockey Thurgau in the National League B (NLB) since July 2016 .

Career

As a striker Stefan Mair began in 1988 his hockey career with HC Bolzano in the Italian Serie A . In the summer of 1989 he moved to league rivals HC Devils Milano , where he played for two years. From 1991 to 1995, the native of Bolzano stormed for AS Varese Hockey before moving to HC Pustertal in 1995 and to SV Ritten in the same year . In the summer of 1996 he returned to HC Pustertal, for which he played Serie A1 and the Alpine League for three years in a row . Before the 1999/2000 season he moved to HC Meran Junior, also from the first Italian league. In the coming season he signed a contract with WSV Sterzing Broncos before ending his career with HC Eppan in the A2 series the following year .

In the 2007/08 season, Stefan Mair coached the Italian first division club SHC Fassa before signing a three-year agreement with league rivals HC Pustertal in the summer of 2008 . Before that, he had been head coach at HC Merano Juniors from 2004 to 2006 . During his tenure in the Pustertal he achieved a continuous increase. While he finished the 2008/09 season (assistant coach Mike Ellis ) in fourth and the 2009/10 season (assistant coach Teppo Kivelä ) in third place in the table, he was runner- up in the 2010/11 season (again with Teppo Kivelä at his Page). After three successful years in Bruneck (including first title win for HC Pustertal at the Italian Cup 2010/11 ), his contract was not extended. He then switched to SG Cortina . After a year in Cortina, where he won the 2011/12 Italian Cup with the team and made it to the semi-finals, he ventured abroad for the first time in the summer of 2012. He reached an agreement with the SERC Wild Wings from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and led the team to the final of the playoffs. With the return of the Wild Wings to the German Ice Hockey League , Mair made his debut as a DEL coach. In November 2014, he was released after eight consecutive defeats.

From 2015 he was the head coach of the Italian national team and in 2016 he was promoted to the top division again. In July 2016 he took over the position of head coach at the Swiss second division club HC Thurgau .
