The 1988/89 season was the 55th season of Serie A1 , the highest Italian ice hockey division . AS Varese Hockey became champions for the second time in the club's history . SG Cortina was relegated to the second division.
mode
In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The eight best-placed teams qualified for the final round, which was divided into two groups of four teams each. According to their ranking in the main round, the teams received bonus points for the final round. In the final round, the teams played in a return match against each group opponent. The first two of the final round groups qualified for the playoffs in which the championship title was played out. The last placed in the main round rose directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
