Career

Born on the east coast of Canada, Tony Currie played for teams in western Canada when he was young. After successful years with the Edmonton Oil Kings from the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), he moved with the team to Portland for the 1976/77 season, where they ran up as Portland Winter Hawks from then on . There he was one of the best scorers in the league and was selected in the fourth round of the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft in 63rd position by the St. Louis Blues .

The 1977/78 season he began with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the Central Hockey League (CHL), but was called to the St. Louis Blues after strong performances and was able to play against immediately on his NHL debut on February 21, 1978 the Pittsburgh Penguins to score his first goal. He also started the season in Salt Lake City for the next two years, played for the "NHL Future Stars" at the Izvestia Cup in 1978 and made it into the NHL team during the season. In the 1979/80 season he succeeded in this impressively when he was appointed to the Blues squad at the turn of the year and scored two goals in three of his first five games. With 19 goals in 40 games, he had finally established himself in the NHL. During the 1981/82 season he was given together with Rick Heinz and Jim Nill and a four-round vote in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Glen Hanlon to the Vancouver Canucks . There he could not build on his successes from St. Louis and mostly played with the Fredericton Express in the American Hockey League (AHL) with many later German legionaries, among others at the side of Grant Martin . In January 1984 the Hartford Whalers engaged him , where he was also mainly used in the farm team , the Nova Scotia Oilers . In December 1984, the Edmonton Oilers secured the rights to Currie, but he was never used. He returned to the AHL with the Fredericton Express for the 1984/85 season before moving to Europe.

In the 1986/87 season he played for the Schwenninger ERC and was one of the best players in the league. After the end of the season, he and his teammate Don Dietrich strengthened the EHC Kloten for the end of the season and the playoffs before returning to Schwenningen for the following season. After two more seasons at AS Varese , with which he was Italian champion in 1989 , he ended his career.
