There he played for three years and was able to improve every season, so that he came to 47 goals and 46 assists in 1977/78.

The St. Louis Blues then selected him in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft in the sixth round at position 89. Nill played the next season for the University of Calgary team and joined the Canadian national team for a year in 1979 , with which he also competed at the 1980 Winter Olympics .

In the summer of 1980 he finally made the leap into professional sport and played for Salt Lake Golden Eagles from the CHL . In 1981 the St. Louis Blues took him into their NHL squad, but during the season he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks . With them he immediately moved into the Stanley Cup finals , but where they were defeated by the New York Islanders . In Vancouver, Nill established himself as a defensively oriented striker who was known for his physical toughness.

In February 1984 he was transferred to the Boston Bruins , but only a year later they gave him over to the Winnipeg Jets . Due to injuries suffered his performance in the following years and he was in the 1987/88 season by the Jets to their AHL - farm team , the Moncton Hawks sent. He didn't stay there long, however, as the Detroit Red Wings signed him in early 1988.

He completed the rest of the season and the 1988/89 season entirely in the NHL team of the Red Wings, but in the following two years, when he was not injured, he was mainly in the AHL with the Adirondack Red Wings and finished in 1991 his career.
