Martin Hanzal (born February 20, 1987 in České Budějovice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League since July 2017 and plays for them in the position of the center .
Career
Martin Hanzal began his career in his hometown in the youth team of HC České Budějovice , where he played in all youth teams and from 2001 played in the U18 junior extra league. At the age of 16 he was promoted to the U20 team and also knew how to convince there. In the 2004/05 season he came to his first missions in the men's team of HC České Budějovice, which was playing in the second-class first division at that time . At the end of the season, his club rose to the extra league .
During the NHL Entry Draft 2005 Hanzal was selected in the first round in 17th place by the Phoenix Coyotes , but remained in the Czech Republic and made his debut on the first day of the 2005/06 season in the Extraliga against HC Rabat Kladno . In total, Hanzal was used 19 times in the Extraliga team, but he mostly had to play defensively. He also continued to play for the U20 juniors and played some games at BK Mladá Boleslav in the 1st division.
At the end of January 2006 he decided to move to North America due to his defensive focus in the Extraliga and stayed with the Omaha Lancers from the United States Hockey League until the end of the season . In the following season he went for the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League on the ice and was the top scorer of the Rebels with 85 points from 60 WHL games at the end of the season .
In the summer of 2007 he took part in both the rookie camp and the Coyotes training camp, where he knew how to convince with his style of play and his willingness to learn. Therefore, he got a place in the NHL squad of the Coyotes for the 2007/08 season and mostly played in the third attack formation. In his rookie season, Hanzal scored eight goals and 27 assists . As a result, the Czech established himself as a fixture in the Coyote squad.
After almost ten years and over 600 NHL appearances for the Coyotes, Hanzal was handed over to the Minnesota Wild in February 2017 along with Ryan White and a four-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Arizona Grayson Downing received a first-round vote in the same draft, a second-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, and a fourth-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . Despite the commitment of Hanzal, the Wild failed in the first playoff round, which meant that the Czech only played 25 games for the team. In July 2017, he joined the Dallas Stars as a free agent , signing a three-year contract that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.75 million. However, he missed his first two seasons in Texas largely due to injuries.
International
Martin Hanzal has participated in five world championships in his career to date: he played for the U18 national team at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2005 , and then for the U20 team at the U20 Junior World Championships in 2006 and 2007 . For the men's national team, he took part in the 2008 and 2013 world championships. He also represented his home country at the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
