Anton Valeryevich Chudobin ( Russian Антон Валерьевич Худобин ; English transcription: Anton Valeryevich Khudobin ; born May 7, 1986 in Ust-Kamenogorsk , Kazakh SSR ) is a Russian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under a contract with the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League since July 2018 .

Career

Anton Chudobin began his career as a hockey player in Kazakhstan. He later attended the HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk ice hockey school , for which he was active in the youth field. During the 2003/04 season he was part of the squad of the second team of Metallurg, which belonged to the third-rate Pervaya League . In the following season he was back-up from Yevgeny Nabokow and Roman Malek with the first team of the club, which participated in the Superliga , and was used in four games.

In 2005 he decided to go to North America to the Saskatoon Blades from the Western Hockey League . After the 2005/06 season Chudobin was named Most Valuable Player of his team, but returned to Magnitogorsk. With Metallurg he won the Russian championship at the end of the 2006/07 season .

After this success he was signed for three years by the Minnesota Wild , who had also drafted him. They used him in the following years with their farm team , the Houston Eros , in the American Hockey League . He also played regularly in the ECHL for the Texas Wildcatters and Florida Everblades . There he also won the ECHL Goaltender of the Year award in the 2007/08 season , after having played 27 regular season games and nine playoff games.

He made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Minnesota Wild on February 4, 2010 , when he came on for Josh Harding in the 51st minute and did not concede a goal with nine shots on goal. Two days later he was in goal for the first time from the start of an NHL game. At the end of February 2011, the Minnesota Wild transferred him to the Boston Bruins in a swap deal for Jeff Penner and the rights to Mikko Lehtonen , who sent him to the farm team to the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League.

Due to the lockout in the NHL, he played between September and December 2012 for Atlant Mytishchi in the Continental Hockey League . In July 2013, he signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes . In the summer of 2014, he signed a two-year contract extension with the Hurricanes.

In June 2015, he was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks for American defender James Wisniewski . At the Ducks, Chudobin was mostly used with the San Diego Gulls in the AHL, before his contract was not renewed after the 2015/16 season. As a result, he returned in July 2016 as a free agent to the Boston Bruins, with whom he signed a two-year contract. He then signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars in early July 2018 .

International

For Russia , Chudobin took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2004 , where he and his team won the gold medal. He won the silver medal at the two following U20 Junior World Championships.

At the men's World Cup in 2014 , he was not used as the third goalkeeper, but won the gold medal with the Sbornaja. In the following year, it was only enough for him personally for a short deployment, with the team winning the silver medal in the end.
